Week of e-tolls, Nando’s, shorts and Juju

VERY little mattered this week as the spotlight was on the imminent e-tolling of Gauteng highways.

While Transport Minister Dipuo Peters warned that the decision to launch e-tolling would not be reversed or revisited, an ANC MP was allegedly calling Agriculture Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson a liar in Parliament.

The opposition DA was not to be outdone, with its MP Pieter van Dalen said to have called another minister, ‘n teef (Afrikaans for bitch).

The two ‘bulls’ of politics were at it again in the North West, locking horns over the ANC’s spending of R132 585 of public money on Nando’s meals.

The circus then moved back to Parliament where an SA National Defence Union organiser was kicked out of a portfolio committee meeting for wearing shorts, revealing his tattooed legs.

Economic Freedom Fighters, under the leadership of the maverick Julius Malema, finally received a certificate of registration from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). This paved way for its launch at the famous Marikana koppie on Sunday, and allowed the party to contest the general election in 2014.

Also this week, the IEC shrugged off its internal squabbles to unveil a comprehensive election plan that includes a voter registration campaign aimed at getting as many South Africans as possible to participate in the next election.
