Masebe happy justice is finally served on Thando’s killer

Sipho Masebe gives Alex News a pat on the back for a job well done for its coverage of the Thando Khumalo murder case story.

The father of the late Thando Khumalo, whose murderer, Peter Mphulo Magolego, was given a 14-year jail time by the Alexandra Regional Court on October 7, has welcomed the finalisation of the two-year-long case.
Sipho Masebe, a businessman and actor by profession and the schoolboy’s adopted father, described the finalisation of the case as a welcome relief for the family, which was tormented by numerous court processes on a lengthy road to justice.

“As a family, both the Masebes and the Khumalos, we welcome the jail time handed to the murderer and the finalisation of the case is a welcome relief for the families who have not missed a single court sitting.
“This will enable the families to begin the healing process and move on with the understanding that justice has been served to the killer, and that we can now start to live our normal lives,” Masebe said.
Masebe said he was a bit perturbed by the defence lawyer, who had asked magistrate Reiner Boshoff to consider giving Magolego a 7-year sentence. However, the magistrate forthrightly rejected the suggestion because the murderer only admitted guilt after two years of back-and-forth appearances in court.

Boshoff expressed the view that Magolego had only pleaded guilty in the hope of getting a lighter sentence but that it was too little too late as he had wasted the court’s time for almost two years.
Masebe also gave Alex News a pat on the back for a job well done by always being in court and ensuring the case was kept in the lips of the township community, and that Thando’s voice was heard.
“Had it not been for the publication’s active citizenry, this case might have just fizzled into nothing. The publication consistently ensured the story was always out there,” Masebe said.
