The Alexandra Field Band made waves in the world of marching bands by clinching an impressive six trophies at the Field Band Foundation National Championships competition, held on September 28 at Wanderers Stadium.

This remarkable achievement set the stage for a jubilant celebration, culminating in a vibrant victory parade on October 6 that brought the entire community of Alexandra together to revel in their success.
Among the accolades garnered by the Alexandra Field Band were the prestigious awards for Best Visual/Show Design Performance and the Black Like Me Best Overall Music Performance Trophy (bronze), alongside a second-place finish for Best Brass Performance, Best Run Project, Best Dance Performance and a commendable Sports Squad recognition.
The parade was not just a display of trophies; it was a celebration of unity and culture within the Alexandra community.
Dancers, musicians and supporters came together to showcase their pride in the band’s achievements, turning the streets into a colourful and energetic spectacle.
The field band’s programme officer and manager Phumzile Twala expressed her elation at the band’s performance and their subsequent victory.
“I am proud of my children because we have been preparing for this competition for the whole year and we were working closely with the parents getting the uniforms together. We also had a week’s camp before the competition so that we got enough time to practice.
“Winning these awards is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. It’s wonderful to see our community come out to celebrate with us,” Twala said.

Phumzile said their goal moving forward was to win the overall national championships and become number one.
“I am confident enough that my team is capable of doing that and they are very talented so we now looking forward to winning next year’s national championships competition.”
One of the dancers Banothile Khumalo shared her thoughts on the experience of competing in the national championships.
“Competing at this level was both thrilling and challenging. We put in a lot of practice and it feels amazing to see our efforts recognised with such incredible awards. Dancing with the band is not just about performance; it’s about expressing our culture and bringing joy to our community,” she said.
Brass tutor and player Tshegofatso Chuene reflected on the competition and the band’s triumph. “The atmosphere at the championships was electrifying. Every performance from other bands pushed us to give our best.
“Winning the Best Brass Performance award was particularly special as it reaffirmed our unique style and creativity. We worked as a cohesive unit, and this victory belongs to each member of the band,” he said.
