The City of Johannesburg held its first Special Council Meeting today to honour the life and legacy of the late EFF PR councillor Moshe Mphahlele.
Mphahlele was shot and killed on August 4 when officers allegedly tried to disperse protesting community members in Marlboro near Alexandra at the site of the container flats.

The meeting, convened by the city’s speaker of the council Nobuhle Mthembu, brought together councillors from all political parties, reflecting a unified respect for their beloved colleague.
Family members of Mphahlele were present, and in a touching tribute, his photo was placed on his seat, a symbol of the void left by his passing.

Mphahlele was celebrated for his dedicated service to the people of Johannesburg, where he was known for his unwavering commitment to public service until his final days.
During the meeting, councillors shared heartfelt anecdotes and tributes, illustrating Mphahlele’s tireless efforts to improve the lives of residents and his enduring enthusiasm for the betterment of the city. His contributions were recognised as a testament to his character and devotion to his community.
“This Special Council Meeting is a fitting tribute to the life and legacy of councillor Mphahlele. His dedication to the people of Johannesburg was unwavering and his passion for public service inspired us all.
“His passing is a loss for us all, but his memory will live on through the work we continue to do to build a better Johannesburg for all. The City of Johannesburg extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of councillor Mphahlele,” Mthembu said.
