City launches Water Safety and Disaster Risk Awareness Campaign
The launch of the Water Safety and Disaster Risk Awareness Campaign of the City's Public Safety Department is to ensure the December 2023 incident is not repeated.
The City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety Department and Alexandra faith-based organisations observed the tragic drownings of 15 congregates last December while performing baptismal rituals in the Jukskei River.

The city’s Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the observance of the incident was also to create awareness ahead of the coming rainy season.
“The city’s department will also hold another observance of the incident at the scene of the drownings on October 13 as part of continued efforts to create awareness to ensure nothing of that sort ever happens again.

“The department saw it fit to use this opportunity to launch the Water Safety and Disaster Risk Awareness Campaign to serve as a reminder to communities and faith-based organisations, especially those in Alexandra, to avoid venturing into swollen rivers for their baptismal rituals,” Mulaudzi said.
