African cuisine on the menu at Alex View Nono’s Kitchen

A new culinary hotspot in Alexandra, Alex View Nono’s Kitchen, is now open with African food flavours that meet community interests.

Alex View Nono’s Kitchen, the brainchild of local food enthusiast Sarah ‘Nono’ Modiba, has opened its doors in Alexandra promising a delicious array of dishes and a vibrant community atmosphere.

Modiba said her journey to entrepreneurship began in 2008 when she relocated to Limpopo and became a mother in 2009, where her life took a turn and she had to find means for her and the baby to survive.

“I relocated to have my firstborn child and life was not easy for me.
“I then spotted a business opportunity at CN Mahlangu FET College where I was selling spaghetti and mince for students. The demand was high, and I received requests from SRC to cater for their conferences.”

Modiba continued to explore new opportunities as her business grew, eventually relocating back to Gauteng in 2011. She worked with her father at his motor engineering company and eventually registered a company with her sister Maryjane, which focused on catering for the government and private sector.

“In February 2024, I rented a small shop selling pap and meaty bones, kota mince, steak and pap, cow heels, mogodu and shawarma. My business was doing well since I had no competitors in the area.

“I then spotted an area within our area in which there was an existing car wash and panel beater. There was a space that people have turned into a dumping site. I then cleaned it for my customers to sit in.”

Modiba said Alex View is more than just a restaurant – it is an experience that celebrates African culture and cuisine.

“I want to run a successful buffet restaurant that showcases African cuisine and makes Alex View a popular tourist attraction site. Marapo and pap are not fancy foods but are important to African culture. I want to share that with my community and the world.”
