Run Alex Athletes ready to conquer Comrades Marathon

The Run Alex Athletics club takes its talented athletes to the esteemed Comrades Marathon, one of the most iconic and challenging ultramarathon events in the world.

Run Alex Athletics Club is sending its runners to prove their mettle in the 2024 Comrades Marathon on June 09.

The club’s coach Godright Selema said they are sending 34 runners to compete in the prestigious event. “I am extremely proud of our athletes who will be participating in the Comrades Marathon.
The main target is to see everyone finishing the race and getting their medals.
“We’ve worked hard to build our team’s endurance, strength, and mental toughness, and I am confident they’ll perform well.”

Selema said the club has also managed to raise funds through the Adreach Alex 10km run, some of which were used to finance unemployed runners on the team. “This covers transport, accommodation and meals costs.”

He said they sent 25 athletes to the Comrades Marathon last year and they all got to the finishing line, which was their biggest achievement because they even got one silver medal.

The team’s departure is scheduled for Friday morning, with arrangements made for transport, accommodation, and meals. “The athletes will be competing in one of the most challenging events in the world, but they’re well-prepared and ready to take on the challenge.”

For Selema, seeing his athletes finish the Comrades Marathon is a major achievement.

“It’s not just about winning medals or setting records, it’s about seeing our athletes push themselves to their limits and achieve their goals. We’re proud of everyone, and we know they’ll make us proud.”

The club is known for its commitment to developing young talent and providing opportunities for athletes from Alexandra and beyond. The Comrades Marathon is a testament to their dedication and hard work.
