Smart metre rollout in Alex to start at councillors’ homes, says City Power

MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department Cllr Jack Sekwaila and City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava will be on hand to oversee the operation.

The installation of the first new smart metres in Alexandra due to start tomorrow [September 5] will kick off with the first installations at the various councillors’ homes in the township before being rolled out to the community.

This is according to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena who said the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), Cllr Jack Sekwaila, City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava will join some of the councillors in Alexandra for the start of the rollout of new smart meters in the township.

Leading by example, Mangena said Cllrs [Adolph] Marema and [Tefo] Raphadu of wards 116 and 105 respectively and others have agreed to be the first to have smart meters installed in their houses as the entity rolls out more meters to the customers mainly on the east of the Jukskei River.

He said City Power will roll out 5 000 smart metres in Alexandra alone as the first step towards getting the residents to pay for their electricity while using the smart metres to also manage consumption during load-shedding.

The rollout in Alexandra is part of a City-wide operation that will see more meters being rolled out for free across the City. The MMC and CEO will be in Alex at the Altrek Sports Facility as of 10:30 tomorrow to oversee the operation, Mangena added.
