Promising Alex cricketers plough back to youngsters

Two talented Alex cricketers who ply their trade in the Gauteng Lions Cricket Club are giving back to the development of budding prodigies of the game in the township.

Two Queens High School learners from Alexandra on cricket bursaries are helping to develop aspiring young cricketers from the township.

Lethabo Gulwa (20) and Lesego Kokohlabena (19) are volunteering their time to youngsters at the Alex KFC Mini-Cricket development festivals that take place annually.

Gulwa and Kokohlabena were scouted by Queens in 2020 and 2022 respectively and are former prodigies of the mini-cricket development programme while they were still at Skeen Primary School.

“We value the skills and knowledge imparted to us when we were also aspiring cricketers, and we thought it fit to also give back and share the little knowledge and skills that we have acquired so far to help these aspiring youngsters reach their dreams in the game.

“It is something we are doing out of love and the desire to develop and nurture youngsters in the cricket game in the township so that one day we too can pride ourselves as a community when some of our own excel on the big stages of the game,” Gulwa said.

Kokohlabena said they had played in the senior team of the Gauteng Lions since 2020 and had been on tour to Zimbabwe in 2019 and India earlier this year.

“We hope to make the Proteas one day and even go further and play internationally in other countries. It’s important not to forget one’s roots and be able to assist where possible in the development of others.

“I would like to urge the youngsters to cling tightly to their dreams and keep doing what they love and never to give up,” Kokohlabena added.
