Alex’s Top Dogz ready for new challenge

Top Dogz coach Thabo Malebjoe says the club is ready to face the new challenge in the Johannesburg Men's Regional League head-on.

After a successful single season in the Johannesburg Men’s Regional League and landing in the ABC Motsepe League in no time, ‘Top Dogz’ coach Thabo Malebjoe hopes to repeat that feat with his Gomtown Boyz FC.

Alexico FC owner Mxolisi Mngomezulu, together with Malebjoe, are the two coaches credited with flying past the regional league and straight into the ABC Motsepe League after Mngomezulu bought the status of Gunners in 2021.

“I and Mxolisi [Mngomezulu] whizzed past all and sundry in the regional league with Alexico and I still think that feat can still be matched with my solo operation now with the Top Dogz. If we made it two seasons back, why can’t I make it now,” Malebjoe told Alex News in an interview soon after being officially crowned champions on August 6 at the Alexandra Stadium.

Malebjoe said he was determined to prove to people that their whizz past everybody that season was no fluke. “I will make sure the ‘boyz’ are in fine form and ready to take on the challenge.

“Thulani Ndlovu [chairperson of the Top Dogz] has been begging me for the past 10 years to come and coach his team and I finally agreed and here they are today, going to the regional league,” Malebjoe said.

In just his second season, he has managed to take the Top Dogz side to the top and gain promotion and move from the LFA to the Safa-run regional league, after missing promotion in his maiden season with the club by a whisker.

Malebjoe said he was keeping the core of the players that gave the side its promotion but will also seek to reinforce the squad as ‘I understand the new league is tough and is no child’s play’.

“We will not change the system of play entirely, but we will tweak it here and there to ensure we further improve it. We also hope to acquire other players from our fellow clubs in the LFA to further bolster the side and also make sure we are technically and tactically prepared for the new challenge,” he said, adding: “We are ready for the new challenge and will take the bull by the horns.”

Father and son Katlego and Christopher Marumo also came to savour the moment for the Top Dogz and wish them well in their new challenge.
