Top Dogz finances not so top and helping hands are needed

We may be well-known in Alexandra as the 'Top Dogz' but our finances are not so top as the club has survived since its inception 15 years ago by selling branded merchandise, says chairperson Thulani Ndlovu.

Champions of the Alex Northrand LFA Promotional for 2023 League Gomtown Boyz played its final game of the season on August 6, at the Alexandra Stadium and showed its archrivals who is boss when they annihilated Norwood Young Stars by five goals to one.

“We just wanted to show them that our league win was no fluke as many seem to think, considering that we have been the whipping boys of the league for 15 years and after assembling an astute technical staff coupled with talented players and a desire to succeed by management, we finally made it,” said club chairperson Thulani Ndlovu in an interview with Alex News soon after the team collected their medals.

“We’re aware of the mammoth task that lies ahead in a new minefield but we are geared and ready for the challenge it poses. We are not going there like sheep to the slaughter but to do the best we can.

“We will seek reinforcements for our squad from our fellow clubs in the township while at the same time retaining the core of the current squad that has delivered the goods for us. We are aware that we will need various additional staff on the technical side like your fitness coaches, etc. and including travel costs and referee fees,” Ndlovu said.

On the financial side of the club, Ndlovu said they were a poor side that survived by selling branded merchandise but the new league will demand much more than that and ‘the meagre financial resources we have will not sustain the club’.

Ndlovu said the club may be well-known in the township as the ‘Top Dogz’ but its finances were not so top. The club was currently in negotiations with potential financial rescuers and once that was finalised the club would be in a position to make an announcement but that does not close the door on other funders who may want to come in on a different aspect of the many challenges faced by the club.
