ABB’s Momelezi Sifumba takes extreme route for career

Thembisan Momelezi Sifumba stood by a busy intersection in Pretoria with a placard in hand to plead to passing motorists for a job opportunity to further his engineering career and a lucky break came his way at the ABB Industry

To what extremes would you go to attain that elusive job opportunity or marriage proposal?

Some would go down on their knees in public places to secure that marriage proposal from their petite sweetheart. For Momelezi Sifumba, who was seeking that elusive employment opportunity after obtaining a B-Tech in Engineering from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria, it was a different ball game.

Sifumba, a Thembisan born in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape studied engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. While studying part-time at TUT, he was looking for a job but no door seemed to open for him after several attempts.

Desperate as he was, Sifumba took to a busy intersection in Pretoria in March 2022 with a message and his details on a placard to the effect that he wanted to be given an opportunity to further his dream career.

A passing motorist, Makwande Gcora, took a keen interest in the desperate message and snapped a photo of him and posted it on LinkedIn. In no time, Sifumba’s phone never stopped ringing with offers left and right, and one of those companies was ABB, a technology company in the electrification and automation industry that employed him.

Since that day in May 2022, Sifumba has never looked back and continues to thrive in the company’s two-year Engineer-in-Training Programme.

Sifumba has never stopped telling about his amazing journey to ABB as he recently did to a group of learners from Minerva Secondary School and Eqinisweni Secondary School from Alex and Thembisa respectively during a Careers Expo on Youth Day.

Asked what he ultimately desired in his engineering career, Sifumba told Alex News, “I am here at ABB to grow my career and knowledge and experience so that one day I can be a proud owner of an engineering firm.”

Sifumba’s testimony was echoed by ABB manager Egon Worthmann who said the company’s career development opportunities as afforded to Sifumba and others were a testament to their response to the government’s call for job creation.

Worthmann urged matriculants and those who recently attended the careers expo to keep an eye on the company’s website for bursary opportunities.
