Alex residents urged to use electricity sparingly

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena urges customers to unplug heavy appliances such as geysers, stoves, and heaters at least 15 minutes before restoration of power after load-shedding to avoid trips.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena has appealed to Alexandra residents in the vicinity of the substations on Kassie Road, Adams Block Road, and Jabulani Crescent in East Bank, and 20th Avenue in the old Alex to use electricity sparingly.

This follows numerous incidents of distributors tripping due to overloading post-load-shedding as there is a high demand and usage in those areas after 18:00 to 21:00 every day.

Although he said power had since been restored, he appealed to residents to use it sparingly so ‘we can all enjoy the uninterrupted availability of electricity, especially during this cold spell’.

“We are calling on the residents in the areas around 1st to 8th Avenues,10th to 13th Avenues including Alfred Nzo residential flats, and areas in Setswetla, Ext. 8, 9, 10 and the surroundings to use electricity sparingly during peak hours of 18:00 to 21:00.

“We urge customers to unplug heavy appliances such as geysers, stoves, and heaters at least 15 minutes before restoration of power after load-shedding to avoid trips and they can then plug them back in 15 minutes after we’ve restored the power to enable the load to stabilise first,” Magena said.

Mangena pointed out that overloading caused tripping and overheating which could melt cable bundles and also lead to mini substations and transformers burning, therefore customers are urged to use electricity wisely to prevent the overloading of the grid.
