Ma-Afrika achieves a milestone of no walkover feat

Fighting for honours is top of the agenda for Ma-Afrika next season but we will also be content if we move a notch up and end up in the Top 8 bracket, says club chairperson Khathu Ramovha.

While many other Alex teams that ply their trade in the Johannesburg Men’s Regional League have endured considerable walkovers, Ma-Afrika FC has achieved a milestone of a no-walkover feat in its maiden season of the league.

According to the club chairperson Khathuchelo Ramovha, it takes a lot of discipline and organisation to come out walkover clean in the demanding league and ‘I am glad we managed our time very well as a team and we hope to keep it that way even in seasons to come’.

“If you want to be successful and ultimately turn professional, then you must learn to manage your time and have a strict regime of timekeeping. When we had a game say at 15:00 anywhere including at home, we had to make sure that the team and accompanying officials leave at least three hours before the game.

“It’s a sad situation that most of our teams are stuck in this league due to lack of timekeeping and discipline. Why should we work so hard to ensure that all team systems function well but fail to keep time and only give away points on a silver platter like that?

“It’s not just the points that are given away but you also lose the meagre financial resources that you can put into use elsewhere, where there is a dire need. I am sure some of the teams that have been in the same league longer than us, could have moved several rungs up the ladder if they kept time and were organised and disciplined,” Ramovha said.

Turning to the club’s mandate for the next season, Ramovha said their overall goal for the coming season was obviously to fight for honours but would also appreciate ending in the Top 8 bracket. “As much as we obviously want to be realistic with ourselves, we will not sit back and relax and be content with mediocre.”
