BONGILE MQWEBA: One of the reasons I love Alex is because it is located in the centre which makes it closer to industrial areas such as work, schools and malls. Moreover, even if you don’t have a car, you can easily travel from one place to another without spending a ridiculous amount of money.

Alex News took to the streets to ask residents “why do you love Alex”. These are some of their responses…
NOMALIZO MAXOLO: I work right here in Pan Plaza and that is an advantage to me because I do not have to catch a taxi to work. This helps me significantly because my salary caters to my and my children’s needs only. I also love the fact that my children are not far from their schools especially the younger ones. The only thing that worries me is their safety from cars and their playing on the street.UNATHI SHELEMBE: Well for me honestly, I love Alex. The only issue I have with living here is our living conditions. We live in one-room houses and shacks with our children, which means there is little to no privacy for all of us. Our homes are congested because we live as a family in a small space fit for one person. Children grow up to be teenagers who need their own private space, but that cannot be afforded because we live in this tiny box, we call home.DONALD PULANE: Alex is a diverse community that is what I like about it. We have people from all corners of Africa, speaking different languages and consuming foreign foods. I think I can speak and understand more than 5 languages because I have a neighbour who is Tsonga and another one who speaks IsiXhosa, others are Zulu, Sotho etc this push me to understand these languages so that we can communicate.SIBUSISO MAPHUMULO. I love Alexandra because it is cost-effective. The standard of living around here is affordable. For example, we have numerous street vendors that sell various foods at reasonable prices. Their cheap prices are due to high competition among them. Fruits, vegetables, meat, kota and salad are affordable. You can get a full meal with just R30 in Alexandra.SIKHULULE MZIMHLE: Personally, I will speak about the entertainment side of Alexandra. Weekends in Alex are nothing short of amazing. You can go anywhere in the country I don’t think there are people who can groove and party like people from here. We know how to entertain ourselves in Alex, they don’t call it Gomora for anything.
