ENSafrica commemorates Human Rights Day with the community of Alexandra

ENSafrica celebrates Human Rights Day by educating the community of Alexandra about their rights and the history of the township of Alexandra.

South Africans celebrate Human Rights Day every year on March 21 to mark the massacre of 69 anti-apartheid pass laws protestors which occurred on the day in 1960 in Sharpville.

ENSafrica’s pro-bono offices at Alex Mall organised a community engagement where they educated the community about their human rights, their impact and the addressing constitutional rights such as the right to justice and also to commemorate those who lost their lives in the fight for the human rights in the country.

The event was in remembrance of the blood, sweat and tears shed before the attainment of freedom in the country. In the programme, ENSafrica sought to educate, celebrate, recognise and remember the history of Alexandra.

ENSafrica’s Pro Bono co-ordinator Thabiso Sefara said the purpose of the day was to teach the community how best it can utilise its rights or use those rights in terms of realising any challenge they might come across, especially within the context of Alexandra.

“I don’t think people are educated enough about their rights but the community was receptive and engaging which means they had an interest in what was being said today and the interaction we got from the participants was amazing,” Sefara said.

One of the attendees, Kgabo Makgere, said although she does not know enough about the history of Alexandra she got some insight and learned a lot from the event. She said that she will also make it her mission to know more about her rights.
