Run Alex Athletics Club headlines a fun run at Alex Plaza
The Alexandra community's fun walk was hosted by Run Alex Athletic Club at Alex Plaza.
Over the years, the Run Alex Athletic Club has steered the community towards a healthy lifestyle with an inaugural 8km and 5km fun run starting and ending at the Alex Plaza on March 21.
Founded in 2018, Run Alex’s main purpose was to encourage residents to embrace a healthy lifestyle while at the same time recruiting young and old in Alexandra to participate in the event.
The fun run kicked off at 06:30 at Alex Plaza. Runners were briefed on the route, safety precautions to take, and what to watch out for while running. Metro police were deployed to ensure everyone’s safety was not compromised and taxi associations were also informed in advance about the event.
“We also plan to do this fun run often, so that people will want to try it out, which will get us more participants.
We want to help build Alex residents from being casual runners to Comrades Marathon finishers,” said Run Alex Athletics Club manager Siphiwe Nkosi.
The community not only participated in the fun run but those who couldn’t run had a chance to show their skills in aerobics. The fun run did not only cater to Alexandra residents but also people from the neighbouring communities.
“I am a new mom, so I have been out of shape for a while, and that showed when I was racing because I was slacking behind. I am planning to go back to the gym soon,” said Molatelo Molefe, who was one of the many participants.
