Thando Khumalo murder accused to spend six months in custody

The man accused of allegedly shooting dead Sandtonview High School learner Thando Khumalo following a road-rage incident last August, will spend the next six months in custody while he waits to hear whether he will be tried in the South Gauteng High Court or the Alexandra Regional Court.

The man accused of fatally shooting Sandtonview High School learner Thando Khumalo in a road-rage incident will have to spend the coming six months behind bars.

This is because the presiding magistrate at the Alexandra Regional Court Renier Boshoff. has written to the South Gauteng High Court asking it to confirm whether the case can be heard there or at the Alexandra Regional Court.
Boshoff indicated this will take quite some time and said he would have to remand the case for six months while awaiting confirmation of where the case will be heard. “I am afraid I will have to remand the accused for six months in custody until such time we receive the confirmation.

“The family will be notified once such confirmation has been received,” Boshoff said as she remanded the accused, who has not been asked to plead to the case which had been initially scheduled for trial on Valentine’s Day [February 14] in the Alexandra Regional Court.
The accused, who is well-known in the social circles of the township, will remain in custody.

Thando and his six friends were returning to his home in Tsutsumani Village in the early morning hours of August 28 last year from a night out when he met his tragic death on the corner of 12th Avenue and Hofmeyer Street.
It is believed Thando’s murder resulted from a road-rage incident when the accused and the boys exchanged words over a nasty driving incident and the accused is alleged to have pulled out a gun.

When the boys realised the accused was armed, they jumped out of the car they were travelling in and bolted. The accused is believed to have given chase and caught up with Thando and shot him in the back of the head and he died on the spot.
