Beauty pageants help keep teens off the streets and away from mischief

Black Rose Academy CEO Marks Bernards appeals to the government to support initiatives such as his and others that are meant to keep the teens off the streets and away from mischief.

Applications are now open to any contestants who wish to take part in three beauty pageants in Alexandra this year.

The pageants are Miss Alexandra Teen 2023, Miss Alexandra Gomora 2023, and Miss Alexandra High Schools 2023 which are open to ages 13 to 19, 18 to 30, and 13 to 20 respectively.

CEO of the Black Rose Academy and pageant organiser Marks Bernards said the beauty contests were aimed at trying to keep girls and boys off the streets and away from mischiefs such as crime, teenage pregnancy and drug abuse which he said were rife in the township.

“Without these activities and others outside our scope, our teenagers would be in a hell of a mess and we would eventually run dry of future leaders.

“It is activities such as these that our government needs to actively support and encourage as they play a vital role of ensuring that our children stay on the straight and narrow,” Bernards told Alex News.

Bernards said the pageants would take place later in the year on dates still to be confirmed but urged those interested in taking part to register as soon as possible so ‘we can work on the logistics and also decide on the dates’.

“Through these pageants and other projects, I believe we can still work together with government to try and curb the social ills that are rampant in our communities and society at large by bringing more of these opportunities and projects for our children.”
