Twala appeals for assistance for granny parties and kiddies helicopter ride

Alex philanthropist Linda Twala is appealing for assistance towards hosting three granny parties and a helicopter ride fort the less fortunate children of Alexandra.

Despite being home to three out of five of the country’s presidents, Alexandra remains riddled with poverty, unemployment, and hunger.

“Many of its elderly residents remain the sole providers for their children and grandchildren through their social grants. The worst part is that year in and year out, it remains a bleak Christmas for most of these elderly residents.

“It is for this reason that I have been hosting Christmas Parties for them, for the past 54 years with the help of our friend of Alex.

“These were the words Alex philanthropist Linda Twala as he appealed for support from various sectors of the corporate world in order for ‘me to put smiles in the faces of the destitute elderly people,” Twala told Alex News.

He said it was that time of the year once again, a time to appreciate the elderly citizens who helped to fight for the freedom being enjoyed today, including the women who marched to the union buildings in a bid to secure freedom for all.

“I appeal to you to come to my rescue so I can me this Christmas a special one for the grannies of the township.” Twala, who runs the Phuthaditjaba-Qoqizizwe Centre for the Elderly in Alexandra, hopes to throw a party for the grannies at his home in 11 – 2nd Avenue on December 9.

Another party will be held at the centre on 17th Avenue on December 10 and a third and final one at the GNF at 48 London Road in Lombardy West on a date still yet to be confirmed.

“We usually host three parties at 3 different locations in Alexandra in order to accommodate the more than 5 000 elderly citizens. We also make sure to cater even for those grannies that live further away as well as the bedridden,” Twala said.

Besides the food for the three parties, Twala said they needed more food in order to make hampers to be handed out to the parties. Twala is also trying to raise R90 000 for a helicopter ride for 600 children on December 7 and 8.

“We usually fly the helicopter to a stadium in Alexandra to make it easier for the children. Our aim is to educate our children about aviation even beyond the air hostess knowledge.
