Alex men to give up beer for the broom

Alex pastor and CEO of Lufunoni Family Centre Andrew Tshikota is busy with men in the township as he coaches them to give up their traditional role of being simple spectators when women grapple with house chores.

Gone are the days when Alex men simply went AWOL or posed as spectators commandeering women as they grappled with household chores.

This follows a decision by the Lufunoni Family Centre to donate ironing boards to men in Alexandra in order to encourage them to participate in the various household chores and not to simply go out drinking beer with friends all the time in order to avoid doing the washing, ironing and even sweeping and tidying the house and yard.

Centre CEO Pastor Andrew Tshikota, described the activities of the centre as focussing on men in our society with a view to eliminating gender-based violence and femicide by changing the male narrative and perspective towards women. The organisation donated the ironing boards on November 20.

Another group of Alex men that have agreed to swap beer for the broom receive their ironing boards at the Lufunoni Family Centre in Far East Bank.

“We want to motivate men and change their mindset in order to work with their partners in their homes to help around the house. We thank God it was successful, and I take this opportunity to invite other men to join us in this journey next year as we give away other ironing boards,” Tshikota said.

Tshikota also runs the My Brother’s Keeper programme from the same premises of the centre in Far East Bank’s Thoko Mngoma Street. In this programme, he brings men together to deal with life issues that affect them on a day-to-day basis and endeavours to find common solutions.

My Brother’s Keeper gave birth to another programme being run in Soweto called ‘Mfundisi na Majita’ which attracted close to 50 men in a workshop recently.
