Alexandrians explain why they love ‘iKasi lethu’

This is why Alexandrians love their kasi.

Despite the unending filth due to a lack of refuse collection and care-free dumping by residents which contributes to a rat infestation and the high levels of crime and drug abuse by the youth, Alexandrians still have a number of reasons to smile about their Kasi.

LUNGA NCUBE: I will not swap Alex for anything. It’s the mother of all townships having given birth to Soweto, Thembisa, Katlehong and Diepsloot just to name a few. It also gave birth to political leaders and other professionals and was home to outstanding sportsmen and women, and musicians.
MUSH RALETJENA: Being a born and bred Alexandrian, I never want something else. If I do, that something else will just be a bedroom where I go to lie down and sleep. I also love Alex for its ability to harmoniously accommodate various ethnic groups and fellow Africans.
KAMOGELO MOQAYI and APHIWE MANKAYI: We love iKasi lethu as it’s the birthplace of many creative artists, both passed on and those still rising to take the baton forward. It may be rough inside with all the grime and crime but it remains our home.

PATRICK BALOYI: Our Kasi residents have dusted themselves off and awakened to the fact that no outsider will get them out of the mess of filth, drug abuse by the youth and high incidents of crime. Our Kasi is having a greater impact on the youth, senior citizens and those living with disabilities.
NKOSINATHI KUNENE: One of the paramount reasons why I love the township is the very reason that it’s my home first and foremost. I believe that nothing, not even your circumstances, can stop you from achieving your dreams, I hope to make it big too.
