Alex community urged to come in numbers to watch Kasi’s version of Wafa-Wafa

The football-loving community of Alexandra has been called upon to come in their numbers to watch their children mesmerise the crowds this weekend when Kasi’s version of Wafa-Wafa takes the township by storm over two days.

A replica version of the Premier Soccer League’s MTN8 Wafa-Wafa known in the iconic township as the Kasi Top 8, the two-day tournament starts with the quarterfinals and semifinals on September 17 at the Number 3 Square Grounds with the final spectacle on September 18 at the Alexandra Stadium.

Speaking at the launch and draw for the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (ANLFA Kasi Top 8), which is an offshoot of the ANLFA Promotional League, one of the two deputy chairpersons of LFA Eric Paul said the tournament had been on the radar of the LFA for quite some time and financial issues put paid to the tournament over the years.

“Here we are today, launching the tournament and courtesy of the chairperson of the LFA Joe Seanego, who has pledged R12 000 towards the prize money at stake for the top two championship teams of the tournament, including the winners of an exhibition match of the LFA’s club chairpersons on the day,” Paul said.

Paul said the winnings would be broken down as follows: the Top 8 championship side will pocket R7 000 for its efforts while the runners-up team would bag R3 000 and the remaining R2 000 would be reserved for the winning side of the club chairpersons clash.

Coaches versus coaches teams would also be on hand to exhibit their skills on the day of the final to add flavour to the football lovers who are expected to come in their numbers.

The tournament would also recognise the various facets of outstanding players on the day, including the coaching staff and the referees. There will be awards for the best defender, player, goalkeeper, coach and referee of the tournament. Both finalist teams would be given kits as part of their winning prize.

Seanego said he was delighted that the much talked about tournament had finally come to life. “The contribution made is my little bit of giving back to the footballing community of this township, no matter how small it may be.

“I took the money away from my family’s children to ensure that my other children in the Alex football world also benefit and are able to grow and realise their dreams of playing football as a career. We have also decided as the executive to suspend all other football games and activities to focus our attention on the success of the Kasi Top 8 tournament,” Seanego said.
