Ekukhanyisweni blows its chance for maximum points in the Discovery Alex U13 Schools League

Although it is still early days for the Discovery Alex U13 Schools League championship, Ekukhanyisweni Primary School's boys team coach Sifiso Kunene expressed his disappointment at the team’s failure to collect maximum points from a ‘weak’ Carter side.

Ekukhanyisweni Primary School‘s boys’ football team has nobody but themselves to blame for failing to collect maximum points from a rather weak and disjointed Carter side in their second match of the Discovery Alex U13 Schools League.

The Ekukhanyisweni side was the first to ask questions from the Carter keeper when they tried to loop the ball over an advancing keeper but it was way above target and the scoring opportunity went begging.

Ekukhanyisweni’s troublesome child Simlindile Mramba, who plies his soccer career at the local club level with Arsenal FC, was forever green in the danger area of Carter but could not find that clear-cut scoring opportunity due to a strong wall of defence mounted by the Carter boys.

At one stage, Simlindile tried to squeeze the ball between the keeper and the upright post but went narrowly wide, and another chance went begging again for the Ekukhanyisweni boys as both sides settled for a goalless first half.

On resumption of the second, both sides went for goals in search of the elusive goal or goals that could make the defence between victory and a drawn game, which was never to be and both sides’ defensive walls stood resolute and would not allow any leaks.

Ekukhanyisweni and Black Poison’s Ndumiso Masondo made a run for the goals from the left flank but were unfortunately tripped and won himself a free kick close to the edge of the box that also went begging.

Sandile Siwela from Ekukhanyisweni, who is contracted to the oldest existing club in the township – Rangers FC which was formed in 1932 and is four years older than the then Alexandra Football Association, which is the oldest LFA in the country – earned himself the only yellow card of the match for rough play but Carter failed to maximise on the opportunity.

Both sides settled for a goalless draw to the disappointment of Ekukhanyisweni teacher and coach Sifiso Kunene, who told his boys after the match that they had nobody but themselves to blame for not collecting maximum points from the weak opponents.

“You had the opportunity to collect maximum points against the weaker side and you just blew it. Now you will have to work the hardest in order to amass the points to qualify for the championship showdown,” Kunene said.
