Alex High’s former learners give back to the school

After suffering from the challenges of paper shortage, Alex High receives donations from the school's grateful alumni.

Alexandra High School’s alumni donated printing paper on August 10, as a form of giving back and helping where they can to a school that made them who they currently are.

Usiba Phillip, an alumnus of Alexandra High School, said a group of former learners started the Alexandra High School Alumni Association – ranging from the Class of 1978 to 1985/86.
They heard about the school’s challenges, among others overcrowding. “The capacity of the school is 1 200 learners but currently, we have 2 500 learners, hence we have a shortage of paper,” said Alexandra High School principal Zoleka Lebelo,

Phillip said the alumni decided to work together in bettering the school.

“We donated 42 boxes of A4 Typek paper to the school and we think they will go a long way as that was the main challenge that was outlined to us.
Although this is a small gesture, this is just the beginning of our long relationship with the school and we aim to help even beyond.”

Lebelo, who has been with the school for over 11 years, said inheriting a school that had no stable leadership was a challenge.
“When I joined the school, the results were barely at 35% because there was no proper teaching and learning, but today I am proud to say, we are leading in Alexandra followed by Bhakilanga High School, our competitor.”

Lebelo said with the input from the alumni that had promised to help where they can, the school will excel, and together they are going to lead the school successfully.
