Alex community marches against the bail application for the 12 accused

The court case of the 12 murder accused has been postponed pending bail application.

The 12 accused in the mass shooting incident in Alex still remain in custody after their bail application has been postponed to August 10.

The accused were apprehended on July 18, after it was alleged that they had shot and killed six people in Alex on the night of July 14, including Alex FM’s Joshua Mbatha and two people in the early hours of July 15.

After appearing in Alexandra Magistrate’s Court for the second time on August 1, their case was postponed to August 10 in light of their bail application.

Alexandra gender-based violence Brigades and ANC Zone 13 members demonstrated outside the court in a ‘picketing against township killers and no bail’ movement.

Dassy Kola, ANC Zone 13 member, said they will continue to march to end crime in the community of Alex and for the accused to be denied bail. “We want to send a message that such heinous crimes are not acceptable in our community and a very strong message to all the allies of the perpetrators that as Alex people we will fight against these crimes.

“Our request that the court refuse these intruders bail is based on our belief that it would be unreasonable for them to be released on bail given that some of them are from the notorious Madala Hostel and may commit crimes once they are free.”
