What to some is a place of ruin and neglect, to the unyielding is a place of opportunities. Alex is battered by many challenges, often attributed to limited opportunities and job scarcity. However, even in the most adverse circumstances, some residents still resolve to fight for a better life.

An array of informal businesses, on various streets, stand out, serving as a testament to the resolute heart of Alex’s residents who refuse to budge under any challenge. One such resident is the founder of Nizer Kota King, Duncan Sigauque.
Born and raised in Alex, he went to Kwabhekilanga Secondary School where his passion for teaching was ignited. When his childhood dream of being an educator got derailed, he decided to start a business to make a living.
“I started in 2020, after I had just come back from Cape Town University. I was studying, but I failed, so, I decided to come back to try life at home.”

Just like other Alex entrepreneurs, Sigauque started with a single fast-food business. He says his love for business grew after realising he is good at it. What began as an establishment for survival, and to make ends meet in a place of scarcity, now employs twelve people across four franchises in the community.
As a believer, he asserts that everything happens in God’s time. “When the time is right, it will happen. It is not about the timeframes, it can happen at any time.”
Although his growth is noteworthy, his journey was not without challenges. He experienced failure, faced tough competition in business, and had to let go of his childhood dream, but he’s still standing and hopeful. “I am focusing on the next five years. I want to focus on growing the business and creating opportunities for others.”
