Sphiwe said his journey in golf began when he was just 13 years old while attending Lyndhurst Primary School.

“I saw people playing golf at the Lombardy East golf driving range and I decided to join them. That’s where I met coach Xolane Mncube who has been mentoring me ever since.

“Under coach Mncube’s guidance, I became a part of the Alexandra Golf Development Club and I have participated in many tournaments including the SA Kids Golf Tournaments,” Sphiwe said.

Sphiwe’s recent experience in the Road to Steyn City Tournament kicked off with preliminary matches on September 4 at Bryanston Country Club.

Representing his club, Alexandra Golf Development, he competed against players from other clubs.

“I was the only one chosen from my club to form a team with players from other clubs because of my points.
“We were chosen from our clubs to form a four-ball and had to play against one another and I am proud to say my team secured second place, which qualified us for the finals.”

Excited to represent the communities of Alexandra and Lyndhurst, Sphiwe expressed his anticipation for the upcoming tournament. “I feel very excited and happy to be in this position. I’m looking forward to playing a good game and managing the course well. I want to give it my best shot.”

While balancing his golf commitments with studies, Sphiwe is also pursuing his education at Central Johannesburg TVET College at the Alexandra campus, studying related and design engineering.

Having transitioned from Sandringham High School, he decided to pursue his studies at college rather than finishing matric. “After Grade 10, I knew I wanted to focus on my passion for golf while still getting a good education.”

Sphiwe’s aspirations extend beyond personal achievements; he hopes to leave a legacy for future generations.

“My goal is to see my name on the walls of Alex Mall and the billboards around the world, just like all the other greats from Alexandra who have made significant contributions.

“I believe that good things take time, that practice makes perfect and that I should never give up.”
