Call to help build children’s library dream in Alexandra

The Refilwe Pieterse Foundation has appealed for community support in establishing a Children’s Street Library in Alexandra.

In an appeal just ahead of the festive season, the Refilwe Pieterse Foundation has released its Christmas wish list, which aims to turn dreams into reality for the children of Alexandra.

Founded in 2018 and registered in 2021, the non-profit organisation has been working to provide applied arts education to disadvantaged children and women in the area. Now, it’s focusing on creating a children’s street library to foster growth, learning, and safety among the youth.

The foundation’s admin volunteer, Nokuthula Sekese, said the situation in Alexandra is dire. “Children grow up in a challenging environment filled with limited opportunities, where the streets often become their playground and classroom.

“Our vision is to transform a neglected dump site into a vibrant reading and play space, which encourages literacy and leadership among the youth,” Sekese said.

She added that Alexandra, known as the oldest township, faces significant challenges such as unemployment, overcrowding, and insufficient infrastructure.

“With many children lacking safe spaces to grow, play, and learn, the foundation proposes to establish a dedicated children’s street library, targeting youth aged four to 17 who are struggling with literacy and come from impoverished backgrounds.

“The library will focus on indigenous literature and introduce innovative programs including gardening, storytelling, and interactive games,” she said.

To realise this ambitious project, the foundation has put together a Christmas wish list that includes essential materials such as bricks, a shipping container, paint, and bookshelves.

“We are calling upon individuals and organisations to help us fulfill this wish list. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to providing a safe, loving environment where children can thrive,” Sekese urged.

The foundation seeks to gather support not only for construction materials but also for the community’s engagement.

Their mission extends beyond just providing a physical space, they aim to spark transformation and innovation, turning young minds into capable leaders through education and community involvement.

“This is not just a library, it is a space for hope and empowerment. We want to ensure every child knows their dreams are possible and that they have the resources to achieve them.”

The foundation’s wish list:

• Bricks to create a 25m wall
• 1x 6m shipping container
• 1x shutter door (2m)
• 4x side boards (2x 6m and 2×2.5m)
