Police hunt for escapee Mduduzi Mgaga after court escape in Wynberg

Two suspects escaped custody during a court appearance at Wynberg Court, prompting a massive manhunt led by Alexandra SAPS.

Alexandra SAPS is hunting for two suspects who escaped from custody during a court appearance at the Wynberg Court on August 26.

The suspects, Thabang Ntuli and Mduduzi Mgaga both previously incarcerated at Johannesburg Correctional Services, were in court regarding charges related to robbery with aggravating circumstances when the incident unfolded.

According to a report by Alexandra SAPS station commander Vusumuzi Ngubane, the suspects were supposed to appear in Court 3.

They took advantage of a gate inadvertently left unlocked, allowing them to flee. “It is deeply concerning that the security measures at the court failed, enabling these individuals to escape,” Ngubane said.

Ngubane confirmed that while Ntuli had since been re-arrested, authorities are still on the lookout for the 30-year-old Mgaga, who resides at 65 10th Ave in Alexandra.

“Our task team, led by Captain Dan Ralethlaka, is working tirelessly around the clock to locate and apprehend Mgaga. We believe the community can play a crucial role by providing any information that could lead to his capture,” he urged.

The two suspects had been awaiting a ruling on their bail application when they seized the opportunity to escape.
Both men were incarcerated following their arrest on November 3, 2023, and had no prior bail agreements. Their escape has raised questions about security protocols at the court, prompting Ngubane to announce measures aimed at improving safety.

“Negligence on the part of our members will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face charges. We will also enhance our supervision and control during court appearances to prevent any similar incidents in the future.

“We are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Mduduzi Mgaga. If anyone has any information about his whereabouts, please come forward and help us bring him to justice.”
