Incidents of ill-discipline persist at Alex High

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona also spoke of a separate incident in which a former learner, accompanied by three boys, gained entry into the school and attacked a current learner.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed the stabbing incidents between a sports volunteer and a Grade 10 learner at Alexandra High School which happened on August 27.

The spokesperson of the department, Steve Mabona, said the department was aware and deeply concerned about violent incidents that occurred at Alexandra High School on August 27.
“Information at our disposal reveals that an altercation ensued between a Grade 10 learner and a sports volunteer, which resulted in both sustaining stabbing wounds. The Emergency Medical Services and the parents of the learner were immediately called, whereby medical assistance was provided onsite.

“The matter was amicably resolved in the presence of the police by all parties involved. The volunteer teacher was instructed to cease coming to the school,” Mabona said.
According to information gathered by Alex News, it is alleged that the volunteer teacher allegedly stabbed the learner on August 26 with a tin opener. The following day, the pupil came to school with a knife and allegedly used it to stab the teacher in the back.

Mabona has not provided the reason that led to the stabbing incidents between the volunteer sports teacher and the Grade 10 learner.
In a separate incident, Mabona, without providing a dateline for the incident, said a former learner at Alexandra High School, accompanied by three boys, gained entry to the school under the pretext of collecting his certificate. They then proceeded to the classrooms, where they attacked a learner.

Mabona said other learners retaliated by throwing chairs at the trespassers, who were subsequently apprehended by the police. The parents of the victim were immediately called and he was rushed to a local clinic for medical attention.
The department’s psycho-social support team was accordingly dispatched to the school to provide the necessary support.
“We strongly condemn any acts of misconduct by anyone which seeks to undermine the dignity of our learning institutions. Schools are urged to enforce their codes of conduct to deal with disciplinary matters.

“The department appeals to parents to assist in enforcing discipline in and outside the school environment,” Mabona added.
