Marlboro Girls Rugby triumphs at UJ Imbokodo Tournament

The Marlboro Girls Rugby U16 team brought the trophy home after winning against Soweto Rugby Club in a final match at the UJ Imbokodo Tournament.

Marlboro Girls Rugby U16 team emerged victorious at the UJ Imbokodo Tournament which ran from August 9–10, capping off an impressive run by defeating the Soweto Rugby Club.

Marlboro Girls won the final match with four tries and a conversion, after a fiercely contested second half, highlighting the girls’ tenacity and skill on the field.

In the first half of the match, both teams demonstrated their capabilities, scoring two tries each. The intensity of the competition was palpable as both sides vied for control.

However, the second half saw Marlboro’s strategic prowess shine through. Hlamalani Mofokeng emerged as a key player, scoring two additional tries that propelled her team ahead.

Goitsemodimo Kwape demonstrated exceptional precision and completed the scoring with a successful conversion.

The team’s coach, Bongumenzi Mbatha, said, “I am excited with my girls claiming victory in such a big tournament. The girls played with heart and determination, their hard work and training paid off.

“Every player gave their best and to watch them rally together in the second half was incredibly inspiring. Hlamalani’s contribution was crucial and Goitsemodimo’s kick at the end beautifully capped off our victory.”

Mbatha added that he wants the girls to balance their academics and sports so that they can pursue both sporting and academic careers.

The team’s captain, Chidimma Kwetle, echoed her coach’s sentiments. “This win is special for us, we prepared for this tournament with commitment and grit; seeing our efforts recognised is fantastic.

“Our chemistry as a team made a significant difference on the field. We supported each other and that’s what rugby is all about.”

One of the players, Goitsemodimo Kwape, said, “I knew I had to step up for my teammates, and I’m so glad I could contribute to our success. Rugby is a team sport, and every try counts, but it feels great to know I helped us secure this win. It’s an amazing feeling!”
