Veld fire causes widespread power outage in Alexandra

A trip at the Sebenza substation due to a veld fire has led to a significant power outage affecting residents in Alexandra and other parts of Johannesburg.

A major power outage impacted thousands in Alexandra and other parts of Johannesburg after the Sebenza substation tripped due to veld fires on August 19.

The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services and City Power were deployed to mitigate the fire underneath the transmission servitude. Power has since been restored and the damage caused is being determined.

The outage affected a significant number of areas including Kew, Gresswold, Melrose, Houghton Estate, and many more within the affected service delivery centres.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said, “Our teams worked tirelessly alongside the emergency services to contain the fire and restore power as quickly as possible. We understand the inconvenience this has caused our residents and are committed to providing updates as we assess the situation.”
