City Power to launch solar water heater initiative in Ward 76

City Power has begun an initiative to install solar water geysers in Ward 76 in Alexandra as a way to reduce household electricity consumption and to support indigent community members.

City Power is gearing up to kick off its anticipated solar water geyser initiative in Region E’s Ward 76 beginning on August 28.

This initiative represents a step in City Power’s commitment to reducing household electricity consumption while supporting the community’s most vulnerable members.

This project forms part of a broader strategy by the power utility to implement load reduction measures aimed at helping households manage their energy use efficiently.

Ward 76 councillor Zandile Mothupi will identify beneficiaries of the programme, which specifically targets indigent residents such as the unemployed, child-headed households, orphans, and individuals living with disabilities.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. “We are excited to launch this programme that will not only conserve energy but provide essential resources to some of our community’s most in-need residents. We believe this initiative will make a positive impact on their lives,” Mangena said.

In conjunction with the solar water heaters, smart meters will also be installed as a mandatory requirement for participation.

“The installation of smart meters is crucial for the success of this programme. We encourage all selected beneficiaries to ensure compliance because those who do not meet this requirement may be removed from the beneficiary list,” Mangena said, adding the project stands to create employment opportunities within the local community.

“As part of the project, 15 locals will be hired through the EPWP programme, with one SMME in the area. Official posters will be put up in strategic spots within the ward, to invite residents to apply for those opportunities.”
