Renowned for its commitment to nurturing exceptional talent, the lab has a storied reputation as a multi-award-winning arts incubator.

Through intensive training, students undergo practical experience in a laboratory environment allowing them to develop their craft to a professional standard.

The programme emphasises learning through experimentation, exchange and collaboration, ensuring that each student’s unique creative journey is guided by expert mentorship.

Only 20 first-year students are selected each year, fostering a close-knit community where individual talents can flourish.

The lab’s alumni community underscores its mission to provide opportunities for talented youth, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue careers in the arts.

When co-founded in 1989 by visionaries Vanessa Cooke, Dr John Kani and Barney Simon, the lab aimed to empower underserved youth with the means to explore their artistic passions.

Today, that mission remains unwavering, fostering sustainable careers and amplifying diverse voices within the theatre space. The lab’s commitment to excellence is evidenced by an impressive array of awards its productions have garnered.

The lab recently received a Standard Bank Bronze Ovation Award for the production Mehlala, directed by alumnus Billy Langa at the National Arts Festival 2024.
