Uphill struggle turned hopeful path as Alex social workers transform lives

In the challenging journey of raising a physically challenged daughter, a mother shares her heartfelt appreciation for the support of Alexandra’s social workers whose dedication has transformed her family’s life and restored hope.

Mokgadi Seduma writes:

As a mother of a physically challenged daughter Tsholoselo Seduma (35), I would like to express my gratitude for the pivotal roles played by social workers from the 8th Avenue Social Workers Department, particularly Johanna and Mrs Malatjie.

Their dedication and support have made a profound impact on my family’s journey, especially for my daughter who faces physical challenges.

When my daughter graduated from her special school we were hopeful that the transition into the next phase of her life would be easier, with available resources to help her put the skills she had learned into practice.

Instead, we found ourselves grappling with unfulfilled promises and significant hurdles. After her graduation, we anticipated a smoother path, but the reality was that we faced another uphill battle. Our efforts to secure the necessary support were often futile.

We ended up running in circles and it wasn’t long before her wheelchair, our lifeline, was broken.

We continued to reach out, making countless calls and visits to the social service centre on 8th Avenue. During this challenging time, Johanna, Mrs Malatjie, and other social workers stepped into our lives as beacons of hope.

They listened to our concerns, advocated for us, and tirelessly coordinated the resources we desperately needed, including physiotherapy sessions and home training for my daughter. Their commitment to helping families is profound and inspiring.

Thanks to their efforts, we received a new wheelchair, and within just two days, my daughter and I strolled through the streets of Rosebank.

Our community needs to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary work done by social workers like Johanna and Mrs Malatjie. They face countless challenges and rely heavily on support from various organisations, yet they remain unwavering in their mission to serve families in need.
