Companies unite on Mandela Day to revamp youth centre in Alex

Fifteen companies forged a bond of hope and transformation on Nelson Mandela Day, creating a brighter future for Alex’s youth with a sweeping revamp of their local health centre.

In a heart-warming demonstration of unity and community spirit, 15 prominent companies in South Africa have teamed up to renovate the Youth Services Medical Centre at the Alexandra Community Health Centre.

This transformative initiative aligns with the global celebration of Mandela Day, a time for honouring Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy of service, justice, and equality.

On July 18, the collaborative effort brought together corporate volunteers and local community members who pooled resources, skills, and expertise to revamp the youth centre creating a more supportive environment for the youth and healthcare practitioners in Alexandra.

This project serves as a testament to the power of collective action marking a significant step toward fostering positive change and empowerment within the community.

The initiative was spearheaded by the SA Medical & Education Foundation, an award-winning non-profit organisation dedicated to high-impact community development projects across South Africa.

The foundation spokesperson Tyrone Pols highlighted the project’s significance. “This Mandela Day, we envisioned implementing a legacy project that will have a lasting impact on the wellbeing of the youth, and the youth centre is a perfect fit as it is a specialist medical centre that caters to the youth of Alexandra.”

With over 180 participants joining in on Mandela Day, the collaborative effort included funding for renovations and an enthusiastic workforce ready to make a difference.

The project’s impact is further enhanced by the previous work completed at the Alexandra Community Health Centre, which involved renovating and equipping the Accident, Emergency, and Therapeutic Services Units in 2023.

Participating companies in this initiative included Bidvest Facilities Management, Clyde & Co, Volkswagen Financial Services, and others. These companies honoured Nelson Mandela’s spirit of unity, compassion, and social responsibility by aligning their efforts with Mandela Day.
