Alex youth to represent South Africa abroad

A runner and tennis player from Alexandra, Rotondwa Rambau, is traded in her township roots for a chance to represent South Africa at the prestigious Festival 24 in France.

A 17-year-old athlete, and tennis player, from Alexandra, Rotondwa Rambau, is all set to represent South Africa, and Afrika Tikkun Phuthaditjaba Centre, at the highly anticipated Festival 24 in France, which started on July 19 and runs until July 28.

This talented young individual has been handpicked to showcase her skills at this prestigious event, which Sports Dans La Ville hosts intending to promote cultural exchange and community development through sports and the arts.

Rotondwa’s journey to the festival began when she discovered her passion for running, and tennis, and she has been honing her skills at Afrika Tikkun.

“I have been passionate about running and playing tennis since I was young. I used to watch people playing tennis on TV, and I was inspired that I also wanted to be a professional, be the best version of myself, and give back to my community.

“I then joined Afrika Tikkun because I wanted to upgrade my skills and have opportunities to compete with tennis players from Gauteng and beyond,” Rotondwa said.

Her talent and dedication have earned her a spot at the festival, where she will share skills with other race and tennis enthusiasts from around the world.

“I am excited to be part of such a big festival which brings together different people from different countries, educating each other about their culture. I will have an opportunity to learn about different cultural performances around the world,” Rotondwa said.

She added that this should serve as an inspiration to others that your background does not determine your future.

“It’s rare to find a young person like me, especially coming from a township, going to represent South Africa in other countries. This shows me that regardless of your background, you can make it.

“I want to motivate other young people, and athletes, in Alexandra, because our township is often looked down upon, but here I am, going overseas to present athletes from townships,” Rotondwa said.

“Young people, chase those dreams and make them come true; whether it’s sport or not, do not let your background determine your future.”
