The Vuka Alex Art set to revive township’s lost art scene

Intsika and Sons Pty Ltd, in partnership with Renavhuyo Pty Ltd, is calling on Alexandra artists to join Vuka Alex Art, a project that aims to bring back the lost art scene in the township.

Renavhuyo Pty Ltd founder Rose Mafutha, an artist herself, said with years of experience in manufacturing furniture from recycled materials she has recognised that they are not getting recognition as artists.

She then came up with the idea of Vuka Alex Art, which seeks to engage artists, entrepreneurs, and the community in a creative journey of expression and development.

Intsika and Sons Pty Ltd founder Jonathan Mdluli with Renavhuyo Pty Ltd founder Rose Mafutha on a mission to revive arts culture in Alex.

“The project focuses on creating a platform for local artists to showcase their talents, share their stories, and develop their skills.

“We want to bring back the joy of art-making to our community. We believe that art has the power to transform lives and communities. Our goal is to create a vibrant arts scene in Alexandra that showcases the talent and creativity of our people,” Mafutha said.

She added that Vuka Alex Art is not just about painting or drawing, it’s about creating a movement that celebrates the past, present, and future of Alexandra.

The project will feature various art forms, including painting, sculpture, photography, music, dance, and performance art.

“We’re not just looking for artists who can paint or draw; we’re looking for individuals with a passion for creativity and entrepreneurship.

“We are hoping to have our art gallery in Alexandra, and to see our centres working, especially Thusong Youth Centre. And also to see young artists making waves with their work and sharing their talent with the world,” Mafutha said.
