Gas explosion rocks the Memela household

In a terrifying gas explosion, a family narrowly escapes injury but their home suffers significant damage.

A gas explosion rocked the Memela household in Alexandra, leaving the family shaken and damaged property in its wake.

The mother of the family Phindile Memela said the incident happened at around 20:00 while they were attempting to connect the gas heater because they could not use the electric heater as there was a load-shedding.

“We bought a new heater and asked our neighbour to help us connect it because we wanted someone who knows how to connect it to the gas.” The heater had three bars but while they were connecting, only one bar heated and within a few minutes it went off.

“When we attempted to light it for the second time, all of a sudden it was flames and I went out screaming asking for help, it was dark as there was no electricity but people came and assisted in stopping the fire,” Memela said.

Memela said they managed to escape without injury but their home was significantly damaged with the walls cracked, and furniture destroyed.
EMS media liaison officer Xolile Khumalo said, “The call was received by the EMS at 20:05 and they arrived at the scene at 20:11.”

Khumalo urged people to ensure their gas cylinders have no visible damages, rust or leakages emanating from the gas cylinder.

“The cylinder must be tightened sufficiently and stored in a ventilated area. It must be kept away from direct sunlight, heat, electrical sockets and other flammable substances.”
