As the polls opened in Alexandra, a vibrant scene unfolded at various voting stations across the township.

In what was a testament to the community’s enthusiasm and commitment to democracy, voters from all walks of life poured in to exercise their right to vote. From the Khumalo voting station to the bustling 3rd Avenue library, and from Alex High School to other locations, citizens of Alexandra flocked to the polling stations in large numbers, eager to make their voices heard in the 2024 elections.

Below are the opinions of a few people who were present on the scene:

Francina Mapheto: It’s my first time voting, I am very excited and nervous at the same time. All I want is our democracy to change, As the youth we want free education and job opportunities .

Agnes Mapheto: I am voting for the first time and I am very excited that’s I haven’t made my mark. I am looking forward for much change in terms of service delivery and free education. As the youth we are fed up with corruption and old age people who does not want to retire in parliament we are saying enough is enough!!

Gerald Malume: I am very excited that I’ve voted and I want change in control borders because there’s a lot of immigrants coming to SA and taking our jobs. I also want electricity and water supply that is stable, we are tired of living in darkness because of load shedding.

Siphiwe Mayisela: I want government to end this issue of load shedding and provide job opportunities to South African citizens, If he would do those two things I would be very pleased.

Victor Ntuli: As the youth, we want job opportunities, free education, skills development programs and I want government to build RDP houses for the elderly that are leaving in shacks here in Alexandra.

Mzo Ntuli: I’ve voted and I am excited of how IEC has prioritised our safety as voters by having JMPD in the voting premises. I want government to provide the youth with job opportunities to eliminate drug abuse and crime.
