City Power meter upgrades started in Alex and nearby suburban areas

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says credit tokens will run out of available numbers in November this year unless they are reset.

City Power is intensifying its efforts in the upgrading of customers’ prepaid meters in Alexandra and other areas that are serviced by the Alexandra Service Delivery Centre in the City of Johannesburg to ensure that they continue to function beyond the deadline of November 24.

This is part of the power utility’s token identifier (TID) programme which started on August 15 last year, and it warned that due to the old technology, all prepaid meters will stop dispensing electricity on November 24.
This is a result of credit tokens running out of available numbers unless they are reset. City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena warned that prepaid meters that are not upgraded then will cease to work.

“Our authorised agents will conduct audits, reset, and replace pre-paid meters at no cost to customers in the Alexandra Service Delivery Centre areas and we appeal to customers to grant our teams access to their properties.
“The teams are easily identifiable, as they wear yellow TID-branded bibs or T-shirts and carry valid ID cards with their photo, name, and surname, as well as an expiry date,” Mangena said.

He warned of a tendency by criminals to use counterfeit meter-reading credentials to enter residential homes to rob unsuspecting customers. To ensure that they don’t fall prey to this crime, customers are urged to verify the TID agents’ credentials by calling the number reflected on their branded bibs or valid ID cards.

Mangena said the service was being provided at no cost and that customers are cautioned not to pay for any TID meter resetting and urged them to report suspicious activities such as being asked to pay for meter resetting service or people at their doorsteps without TID-branded clothing who also have no ID cards.
