The DA in Johannesburg is monitoring the Johannesburg Central Business District after explosion on Bree Street

The DA in Joburg will ensure no stone is left unturned in investigating the incident and will take urgent steps to prevent a recurrence

The Democratic Alliance in Johannesburg was monitoring the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) after an underground explosion on Bree Street on July 19.

The DA’s caucus leader in Johannesburg, Belinda Echeozonjoku was at the scene last night to assess the situation, while DA Shadow MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun has been in constant contact with the relevant authorities to ensure that the residents were informed and assistance offered to those in need.

The explosion yesterday on Bree Street in the CBD resulted in the death of one person and 36 were injured. There was substantial damage to both infrastructure and vehicles in the immediate vicinity. Emergency services were currently on the scene, and all necessary measures were being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the area.

The DA’s spokesperson Devon Steenkamp said, “The DA in Joburg will ensure that no stone is left unturned in investigating the incident and will take urgent steps to prevent a recurrence. The safety and security of our community is of utmost importance.”

The extent of the injuries and damage at this stage included:

  • One fatality was reported and 36 patients were taken to various hospitals for treatment ranging from two critical, eight moderate to severe, and 26 minor injuries.
  • 37 minibus taxis were damaged on Simmonds Street and Bree Street.
  • Bree Street and surrounds are to be closed off indefinitely.

DA Caucus Leader Councillor Belinda Kayser- Echeozonjoku was also on the ground last night to offer support to those affected.
