Six signs to look out for if your pet has heat stroke

Pets should be kept inside, or in the shade while the city experiences a heat wave.

Radiokop Animal Clinic in Roodepoort issued an alert for heatstroke in pets as the city experiences high temperatures.

Dr. Robyn Moll, veterinarian said, “Dogs and pets will also struggle with the heat when it is hot like it is this week and it’s important to help prevent heatstroke if possible.”

She said pets should be kept inside, or in the shade and have access to water for them to drink. “If any symptoms persist after the animal was given cool water and a cool place to rest, please immediately seek medical care from your nearest vet.”

She also stressed the importance of not walking dogs before 09:00 on hot days ideally as the afternoons and evenings are the hottest time of day. “If you can’t hold your hand to the road surface for longer than a few seconds then it is too hot for your dogs’ feet as blisters and burning can occur.”

Six signs of heat stroke in dogs are rapid panting, weakness, bright red tongue, diarrhoea, vomiting and thick or sticky saliva.
