Alex creatives paint Braamfontein red

Nnete asked those who can and are willing to do so, for assistance to fund the next show.

On July 10, Alex-born Nnete Makgoka, known professionally as Nnete, held her first live music show to expose new and upcoming artists on at a restaurant in Braamfontein.

Nnete said she met Keitumetse Molathlegi – who is the new owner of the Leano Restaurant in Braamfontein – in 2019. At that time Molathlegi was working at a restaurant in Rosebank. “I went to the restaurant with my friend just to have fun. Molathlegi, who was so accommodating and chatty, realised through our chats that I was an artist. She asked me to perform as she wanted to turn the place into a live music show,” Nnete said.

“I refused to perform because, at the time, I was not in the right head space – as I had taken a break after losing my father. But I promised to hook her up with the artists that I know, which I did.”

She added, “Over the years we kept in contact, we’d call and chat. [In] April this year she told me she had moved to Braamfontein and gave me the same offer [to perform], except I did not refuse this time around because Braamfontein has a prestigious stage.

“I decided to pitch the idea of doing the live music show every Sunday and bringing an upcoming artist to perform who will be paid by the tickets sold. When she agreed to the idea we started planning, without funding I managed to pull it off and our first Sunday was July 10.”

Nnete wants to support upcoming artists so they would become known. “I believe this is the exposure the upcoming artists need to be known. Hence the name of the show is Ke Bo Mang? [which means Who are they?]. The meaning behind the name is that these artists are not known, and the minute they get on stage people will ask ‘who are they’, and through their performances, they will introduce themselves.”

She asked those who can and are willing to do so, for assistance to fund the next show. “I believe with the funding we can do even more. What matters to me right now is to give new artists an opportunity to perform on this big stage while I still can so they get the potential to be booked too and be known.”

The recent performance featured various new artists, including Alex’s own Spartz Mothlamme. Mothlamme has worked with prominent artists such as Themba Ngubane, Bonginkosi Maggz, Marcus Harvey, 013 Choppa, Kabza De Small, and Thando Zide.

Mothlamme said, “Ke Bo Mang? is a good initiative for us artists that are yet to be known. My overall experience was amazing and I wish Ke Bo Mang? nothing but the best with doing the same for other artists.”
