Bramley View’s Huntley dreams of world stage for sbujwa

A Bramley View dance lad has set his eyes on the revival of the archaic dance style, sbujwa and dreams of taking it up to the world stage.

Bramley View dance lad and Red Bull Dance Your Style Johannesburg 2021 champion Adonis Donna Huntley harbours a dream of reviving the archaic ‘sbujwa’ (bourgeoisie) dance style of the 1980s and ultimately put it on the world map.

Huntley, who turns 28 on December 6 this year, has just completed doing Dance Your Style workshops at the Bloemfontein qualifiers and could be moving to other centres with the Red Bull crew for more workshops before the national finals that are scheduled for October 22 and 23 in Pretoria.

After the national finals, the dance competition moves to Montecasino in Fourways for the world finals on December 10. Last year’s world finals were scuppered by the unattainable situation of Covid-19. Last year’s national champion Shanny J, along with this year’s champion that will emerge in October, will represent Mzansi in the world finals.

Speaking in a telephonic interview with Alex News, Huntley said he harbours the dream of reviving the sbujwa dance and taking it to the world stage. “I fell in love with sbujwa way back in 2006 Formula Boy’ videos of the dance style and I have never looked back ever since.”

Huntley said he was considering approaching Red Bull to partner with him on the project of internationalising the sbujwa dance. “This is my dream,” he said, adding that the dance was self-taught through watching the old videos and he felt he should revive the dance.

Besides dancing, Huntley runs a clothing label known as Donna D (which is Donna Denim in full) with his Soweto partner known as Bongumusa ‘Troy’ Mchunu.

“We are currently debating a change of name for the clothing brand which we launched in 2014.”
