Alex gamers and e-sports enthusiasts wanted for incubation

The Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industry is for 20 Alex gamers and e-sports enthusiasts to be incubated at the chamber's incubation hub at its offices in Wynberg.

The Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industry in conjunction with the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg is calling on all gaming and e-sport enthusiasts to join the chamber’s incubation programme.

The call was made by the chamber’s IT specialist and marketing coordinator Keletso Mauku during an interview with Alex News at the Motsweding offices of the chamber in Wynberg.

Mauku said they were looking for 20 candidates to be incubated over a two-day programme on a Saturday and Sunday and they will be taught how to create a game jam from scratch. “We also want to give them the game-jam skills,” he said.

The chamber also hopes to host a three-day game-jamming affair at Motsweding starting on August 20 to 22, to test the readiness of the township youth to take full advantage of gaming and e-sports.

“E-sports is now a big global sport business and aspiring enthusiasts of the sport and gaming can take up careers in this IT-related 4IR [4th Industrial Revolution] business.

“By calling for gamers and e-sport lovers, we want to expose our youth to this lucrative industry and give them the necessary tools that will enable them to participate in this billion rand global sporting industry and ensure they can make a living out of it as well.

“The chamber also wants to introduce gaming and e-sports to women and the physically handicapped as part of a wider programme of the chamber to try and reclaim the township economy and ensure that our people participate and fully exploit the opportunities available.”
