Authors share their experiences with the students at Alex Theatre Company and Academy

Alex Theatre Company and Academy celebrates women's month through reading, joined by hot shot authors.

In honour of Women’s Month, the Alex Theatre Company and Academy organised an event where authors shared their success stories with students of the academy.

Featured authors were Niq Mhlongo, Lorato Trok, Melusi Tshabalala, Thando Pato, Dr Nokuthula Mazibuko Msimang, and Lindiwe Ramokgadi, and they all shared their township experiences and their lives in general.

“We want to encourage reading from a very young age, as we strongly believe that the more we read, the better people we will become,” said Masiza Mbali, the head of education at Alex Theatre Company and Academy.

Mbali said their sessions during the event included storytelling for children and an adult programme where the authors shared their stories, both personal and from their books, with the students.

Lorraine Sithole, a literacy activist said, “As part of our Women’s Month celebration programme, we thought of taking the stories back to where they come from. We shared these stories to inspire, especially the youth, to say their stories matter, no matter where they come from.”

Mhlongo added, “I am here to encourage the love for reading because reading is important for everyone. When you read, it becomes easier for you to understand other people, languages and their cultures, and also understand the world in general. Alex is one of the special places because of its outstanding history, it has a rich history of stories, and as a writer, I am excited to be in Alex.”
