About 110 golfers tore up the greens with their banter, skill and cheer as they played at Eagle Canyon Golf Estate for a good cause.
The sun shone kindly down for the third annual Charity Golf Day, which went off without a hitch on July 28.
Money and awareness was raised for The Dempsey Foundation and Friends of Rescued Animals (Fora).
The former helps families with children with special needs, and is based in Roodepoort, while the latter is an animal shelter based in Krugersdorp but services areas as far as Randburg by taking in stray animals, vaccinating and sterilising them, and then finding safe homes for them.
“We are always grateful for golf days like this, where we can have our raffle and further donations,” said Candis van Gylswyk from Fora.
“I want golfers to have fun today and become aware of the need to sterilise and vaccinate animals. People also need to stop going to breeders as there is a need for adoptions at animal shelters.”
The golf day also had prizes for the one finishing closest to the pin at hole eight, and for the one with the longest drive, at hole 18.
Entertainment was provided throughout the day by musicians Pieter Smith, Altus Theart and Sanna’Q.
Lions rugby players Alwyn Hollenbach and Willie Wepener also played golf.
“I am happy with how everything has gone, and all the players know that this is about the charities,” said Corrie Vrey, manager of Steel & Pipes for Africa, which hosted the event along with NESJ Design.
Part-owner of NESJ Design, Johnny van Eden agreed, adding that in the first week of spaces opening for golfers, just about all the spots were bought up.
“We missed this for two years during Covid-19 so it is great to be back,” he said.
“We have had lots of sponsors and I am proud of how much support local businesses have shown.”
