From soup to blankets donated on Mandela Day in Alex

The impoverished township of Alexandra was a hive of activity on Mandela Day as charitable people and institutions poured out their hearts in support of this community, and the SA Jewish Board of Deputies was not to be outdone.

Soup, cupcakes and blankets were distributed to more than 150 people in Alexandra on Mandela Day.

The event was organised by Fingertips of Africa in celebration of the late former President Nelson Mandela’s life, and members of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) were there to pay tribute to Fingertips founder Yehuda Lazarus whose organisation runs shelters, food parcels for distributions, and provides soup kitchens and blankets in Alexandra and Soweto.

The NGO, which receives funding from the SA Jewish Board and the Angel Network, has expanded its operations to include supporting seven community welfare organisations, as well as providing assistance to victims of shack fires and running a sewing school.
